Police chiefs defend chase that injured 2
This story has it all. An officer shoots at a fleeing suspect after the suspect "nearly" ran him down. The suspect was steeling wheels from a vehicle. The chase was safe because it was daylight and dry-even though it reached 70mph in residential areas at 6:30 in the morning. The suspect was "allegedly" a repeat offender-although how they knew this at the time was unclear since they later said the suspect's identify was unknown. The passenger, however, had an extensive criminal record. Birmingham Deputy Police Chief Don Studt was quoted as saying, “The only way to prevent a chase is to adopt a policy you aren’t chasing,” Studt said. “And who wants a reputation like that?” And, “Even if we had stopped chasing, is he going to slow down and drive prudently? Probably not.” Actually the real answer to the question is -yes.

Chelmsford man charged with DUI after police chase
The reporter in this story seemed to think it was ironic that this DUI suspect led police to his home after a 4 mile, 120 mph, chase initiated for speeding. Actually most DUIs are doing exactly that-trying to get home and go to bed. Good police officers know that if you can get a licensee plate number you can just wait in front of the suspect's residence and arrest him when he gets there.

Two Children Killed by Driver Fleeing Police
It is disputed by witnesses that Washington police had broken off the chase of a driver who had fled a scene of a "buy and bust" narcotics sting because, according to DC police spokesman Sgt. Joe Gentile, the suspect recognized the officers. Troubling enough, but a statement by Assistant Police Chief Peter Newsham is nothing less that shocking, "Even if police had violated the policy," Newsham said, "the officers would not be responsible for the children's death. The blame lies solely on the shoulders of the driver who was fleeing." Brings to mind the question-Why do the DC police even have Policies?
